COURSES

Qawsain Higher Education's courses are designed to equip students with the tools necessary to begin their lifelong journey with the Word of God. What follows below are brief overviews of each level – although keep in mind that these barely scratch the surface of the valuable knowledge to be gained in these classes!

Quran Level I:

Introduction to the Study of the Quran

Level 1 introduces students to the study of the Quran through an examination of the relationship between the Word of God and the human being. In the first part of the course, Imam Fode sheds light on the Seven Words of God and the process through which human beings discover their Word and grow and expand with it until God makes it written and binding upon them. The second part of the course explores the development of the soul on the spiritual path, from its creation to its transformation when it encounters the Word and the Spirit. Finally, Imam analyzes the concept of tawbah (repentance), one of these Seven Words. Those who enroll in this course are encouraged to purchase the Quran Level I textbook.

Quran Level II:

The Unification of the Soul and

the Pentagons of Islam

Level 2 focuses on the process of spiritual growth and enlightenment that is outlined in the Quran. Imam begins the class with a discussion of the unification of the soul, and how it requires dhikr (remembrance), shukr (gratitude), and taʿah (obedience). He then highlights how our interactions with the Quran bring us healing and mercy and help us emerge from darkness into light. This level also provides an important tool for studying both the Quran and spirituality: the pentagon, a model through which we can understand and analyze the elements needed for growth. The class ends with an analysis of another one of the Seven Words of God, which is taharah (purity).

Quran Level III:

The Vital Essence

Level 3 features a study of the vital essence, which is a support from God that comes after the soul has been unified. With reference to key ayahs from the Qur’an, Imam Fode details its qualities, the ways in which it aids and affects the believer, and its place in the process of the unification of the soul. He also explains the spiritual journey that occurs through recognizing and responding to manifestations of God’s ‘azamah (magnificence) and kibriya’ (grandiosity). This journey requires the believer to balance between the perspectives of unity and differentiation in order to find certainty. Finally, Imam Fode uses these concepts to provide an extensive commentary on Surah al-Rum 17-25.

Quran Level IV:

The Higher Self

Level 4 is an examination of the notion of the higher self (al-mathal al-a’la) mentioned at several points in the Qur’an. The first half of the course offers a comparative analysis between the higher and lower selves: their characteristics as well as their relationships with the good and evil words, and with the darknesses and the light. The second half of the course outlines the seven stations on the path to the higher self, as mentioned in Surah al-Rum. In this section, Imam Fode discusses the salient features of each station, the types of faculties associated with it, and the type of travelling that it requires. This path culminates with the emergence of the higher self, and with Allah’s appointment of an individual as an excellent example (‘uswa hasana).
