The Queens Head, Newfoundland's
Undiscovered Jewel

By Audrey Manning(courtesy of The Kittiwake Commentary-02/95)

Nestled on the Kittiwake Coast (formerly the North Atlantic Coast) of Newfoundland, lies the Queen's Head. The Queen's Head, located in Lumsden North, is Newfoundland's best kept secret. There are many reasons for this. Perhaps the foremost reason is that the residents are reluctant to talk about the strange 'goings on' there.

Anyone familiar with the Kittiwake Coast understands its relationship to the North Atlantic Ocean. It is a fierce windswept coast buffeted by storms and frequented by pirates down through the centuries.

Lumsden North has miles and miles of sandy beaches and on warm summer night on these beaches, one can see strange lights moving back and forth. These lights have been associated with the pirates who used to land there to seek refuge from the storms.

The last pirate to live on the beach in Lumsden North was Billy Murne who died there towards the end of last century. It is said that Billy Murne's treasure is still on the beach waiting to be discovered. Peter Easton's treasure is waiting to be discovered on the offshore island, known locally as No'der (Norther) Island.

Whatever your idea of spirits and ghosts, the spirits on the Queen's Head are positive spirits ready to help individuals understand why they are here and what their contribution should be in this vast universe. One year in December during a severe storm a ship, the S.S. Thackeray, went ashore on the Queen's Head. The crew had to be taken off the ship in a bosun's chair. Many of the Lumsden residents risked their lives to rescue the crew, but there was not one accident.

For whatever reason, this spot has always been a place to find solace and peace. If one is open to the possibility, it teaches respect for all living creatures and points to a new direction for the human race. A direction that places value on every human life and helps us to understand that all living organisms have a place in this vast universal system.
